How we treat
Within physiotherapy there are a number of different techniques and methods which can help injuries recover faster and allow the tissues to heal better. These include but are not limited to; soft tissue release techniques such as:
- Dry needling - using an acupuncture needle and placing it into a trigger point within the muscle, a twitch response from the muscle should occur thereby causing a complete release of the tension in that area of the muscle. A very effective and direct technique with immediate results.
- Muscle re-education - as a result of pain, joint restrictions and compensatory movements muscles can function abnormally thus reinforcing a negative muscle pattern and cause further damage, pain.
- Taping - using various tapes we can either facillitate or inhibit some muscle activity as is required. Equally we can tape a joint to reinforce a damaged ligament or restore some passive stability to the joint. The use of Kinesio tape can also aid swelling control and improve drainage in an area
- Exercise rehabilitation - where a muscle requires better strength, endurance or a different firing pattern this is achieved through appropriate exercise prescription
- Graston - a relatively new technique in which the tissues are
- Frictions - usually applied to tendons/ligaments and scar tissue. Aim is to break down adhesions and scar tissue
- Joint mobilisations - applied to stiff joints in varying grades due to inactivity from posture or after being in a cast or brace, degenerative processes or trauma related injuries e.g. whiplash.
- Joint manipulations - applied to particular joints to increase range of movement, reduce stiffess or release structures trapped - e.g. nerves in the spine.
- Balance and gait re-training - typically following injury, surgery or from being in a brace or cast. This is a very important part of the process which is often forgotten and can lead to quite serious issues down the line in the rehabilitation process.
- Electrotherapy modalities such as electromuscle stimulation, TENS, ultrasound
- Occlusion training - this technique is used to accelerate the healing process, esp of chronic injuries.
